Artist Statement
Process is at the center of my artistic practice. Material and craft come together in biophilic designs for the purpose of connecting with nature and art for healing. I am interested in the connection between the natural world and craft and how humans have used it for individual and community healing. This can be seen in the crafts I utilize, materials I work with, and the sculptural forms I create. The process becomes a meditation, through the repetitive actions and grounding effects of crafting, the objects then become artifacts. I choose forms from nature that humans have strong connections to and these objects often have symbolic parallels for humans. Shells, nests, plants and other things from the natural world become vessels for human desires such as home, safety, resilience, and peace. The repetitive and performative aspect of craft has been an escape for me from the emotional and physical toll from a life long autoimmune disorder and as I leaned into the ritual of creating as a form of mediation I found relief. Becoming aware of that shift from escapism to mediation inspired me to research and find a rich history of humans consciously and subconsciously turning to nature, and craft for healing and connections to things beyond ourselves.
